Halo halo, I’m Lola! I am Filipina, foodie connoisseur and a culinary enthusiast. I’m starting this blog because as a Filipina there is so much to learn about the Filipino culture. Specifically the Filipino cuisine. Growing up I am very fortunate to be exposed to cooking at a young age. My grandmother showed me the power of what food can do. It can bring people together, it can express love, and it is a language of its own. Through food, she taught me family history and her life in the Philippines. The way she cooked with finesse, attention to details yet poured love into every dish for parties and dinners was truly an amazement to watch. She brought out my inner passion for cooking.

Which leads me up to this point. There is still so much more to unravel about Filipino cooking and the culture. I am very blessed that growing up I visited the Philippines often, even calling it home, but the Philippines is an archipelago consisting of 7,641 islands. 7,641 islands I have yet to explore (technically 7,639 islands I have yet to explore, but who’s counting). Every region has their own unique dishes I have yet to try that can unlock the past, present and future. Unfortunately with COVID-19 still lurking, traveling is out of the question. Instead I’m bringing the dishes to me. I follow and admire many Filipino chefs. Some even published their own Filipino cookbooks. I may not be able to learn from them in person, but I thought cooking through their cookbooks would be the best way of getting a deep dive into the Filipino cuisine. So here goes nothing! The contestant: A 28 year old cooking her way through cookbooks. The first contender: Amboy- Recipes from the Filipino-American Dream by Alvin Cailan.
